Nissan
The ad itself looked great, what with all the racing goodness. Surprised to see an actual track accident in an ad. But… that song. You do know that song does not at all have a happy ending, right? We're supposed to believe the kid is going to be okay because Dad picks him up in what is apparently a new Maxima. The feels are strong (again, that song), and it makes me grateful for the relationship I have with my Dad and relationship I hope I'm developing with my son.
The best comment about that new Maxima?
"CVT Shame Mobile"
Chevy Colorado
So, Chevy needs to make itself feel good by comparing the Colorado to a five-year old Corolla, a thirteen-year old Civic, and a moped. Seems legit. At least the pre-game ad for their 4G LTE Wi-Fi was good.
Dodge
A really good effort, and the guy at the end throwing devil horns was outstanding, not to mention the word "bitching" in a network ad. Needed more hooning. Also, that ad is from last April, celebrating Dodge's 100th anniversary. Seems like an odd - or maybe safe? - way to spend $4.5M.
Mercedes-Benz
Not bad, and I dig the car. But that jump at the end was just terrible, on par with the half-assed CGI used when launching Nicolas Cage and Eleanor on that bridge in Long Beach. On the flipside, super props to AMG for putting a Star on the clutch pack.

I kind of got sick of the "Dad" theme in the various commercials, it's as played out as last years pull on your heart strings in every commercial theme.
I think the AMG GT ad they should've used was this one posted on Oppo a few days ago:
A millions times better than that stupid rabbit vs turtle non sense.
And lastly man that Maxima is all kinds of ugly, it's a cold day in Hell when Hyundai and Kia's car design is looking more elegant.

I seem to be the only person who liked the Nissan ad. I also didn't get the sense that everything was supposed to be OK at the end. I'm not sure it works well to sell Nissans, but I thought it was well-done.

That Nissan commercial made zero sense if you try interpret it as a happy ending or as a promotion of their products or racing division. Maybe it was just an artistic, realistic, bittersweet, slice-of-life "this is why it is hard to be a race car driver" (a la Steve McQueen in Le Mans)?

I give credit for originality, which means the pre-game Chevy commercial wins on the automaker front.
Close 2nd goes to the Dodge commercial, because doing burnouts while 100 is something to aspire to.
The BMW ad was decent, but I think a lot of viewers will miss the point.
The MB ad was dumb. As was the Pierce Brosnan one.
The Nissan one was extra dumb. Racing is a family sport! Why not take the wife & kid with you? The only time he gets to see you is on tv, or when you pick him up from school in a Burgundy CVT Suppository? Bleh.

I liked the one that suggested the two door Fiat 500 was a limp, weak penis.

SB commercials are all about brand image.
I think that one may have been too direct. It was the safe choice by Merc to associate themselves with woodland creatures.

Visually, it was a great ad. That song, though...

I understand that it's a sad song, and that some feel that it's inappropriate because Harry Chapin died in a car crash, but it fit the tone of the ad.
On a side note, the ad made me realize the size difference between the GTR and the Porsches it was racing against during the crash scene. The GTR looks giant in comparison.

Maybe the Nissan ad is supposed to have a different message or at least an extended message separate from a dad who did not spend time with his son. At the end, he wins the race and you see him put down his helmet and leaves with his bags almost as if he won and now its time to rebuild a strong relationship with his son. Nissan's message might be that he is going to make a big positive change and somehow it deffinitely starts with a new Maxima. So go make a big positive change in your life and buy a maxima...sure..
